Killeen ISD Introduces SMART Tag System to Improve Bus Safety and Parent Communication Killeen ISD July 20, 2026 Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, Killeen ISD will implement the SMART Tag™ bus safety system, providing families with real-time transportation updates and an additional layer of safety for students who ride district buses. Students will scan their school ID badge when boarding and exiting the bus, allowing transportation staff to verify ridership, help ensure students are on the correct bus and provide families with real-time updates through the SMART Tag™ Parent App. The badges do not store personal information. "Student safety is at the center of every decision we make in Transportation Services," said Myron Wilson, executive director of Transportation. "SMART Tag gives us another tool to help ensure students get where they need to be safely while providing families with greater visibility and peace of mind. We believe strong communication with parents is an important part of creating a positive transportation experience for students." Families can download the SMART Tag™ Parent App through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Features include real-time bus ride updates, student boarding and drop-off notifications, bus location information, student transportation history and improved communication with the Transportation Department. The SMART Tag™ system is designed to help Killeen ISD provide a safer and more connected transportation experience for students and families. Killeen ISD encourages families to register for the SMART Tag™ Parent App before the start of the school year. Additional information, parent resources, app download links and transportation information are available at Killeen Independent School District .

Killeen ISD Families, You may have seen recent news coverage regarding Lifetouch Photography Services, a third-party vendor used by school districts nationwide and by some of our KISD schools. KISD takes student privacy seriously, and we expect the same from any vendor working with our schools. Vendors are expected to follow applicable state and federal student privacy laws, including FERPA. Lifetouch has publicly stated that the claims being shared online are not accurate. At this time, we are not aware of verified information indicating KISD student photos have been accessed or misused. School photography participation is optional. If you do not want your student photographed, please contact your campus front office before picture day to request an opt-out. Beginning next school year, Killeen ISD will oversee a districtwide photography vendor selection process to ensure consistency and evaluate potential cost savings, while maintaining clear expectations for student privacy. We will continue to monitor credible updates and communicate with families if circumstances change. Killeen ISD
