KISD PD training 2025

Killeen ISD police officers completed three days of active shooter response training this week on the Ellison High School campus, combining classroom instruction with drills centered on stopping casualties and rescuing injured.

The department used training from the ALERRT Center at Texas State University, which is the FBI national standard.

“Our goal in training is to reinforce life-saving techniques, strengthen teamwork among our officers and enhance our response capabilities,” said KISD Police Chief Erik Hydorn. “When seconds count, we want every officer on our team to be ready to stop the threat and protect our students and staff without hesitation.”

Police officers learned in groups, each participating for three days over two weeks. The blocks were divided into lecture and demonstration, simulated live fire scenarios and vehicle rescue.

In the simulated scenarios, officers arrived on the scene, made entry into the building, moved in team formation through the hallways assessing each room and responding to what they found.

Officers took turns walking through the scenes and playing the role of victims.

The active learning incorporated all the tactics they learned in varied scenes that instructors switched up to test response to situations such as shots fired and discovering injuries of varied severity.

The training was based on learning from shootings that have occurred across the nation and is meant to establish uniform response practices across law enforcement agencies.
